Starting February 1, 2024, a charge of $0.005 per IP per hour will be imposed on all public IPv4 addresses, regardless of attachment to a service. This pricing adjustment in AWS is attributed to the increasing scarcity of IPv4 addresses and aims to encourage economical use and the adoption of IPv6. The new pricing applies to various AWS services, including EC2, RDS, and EKS nodes, and applies to all AWS regions.
Summary of Changes:
$0.005 per hour charge for all public IPv4 addresses, active or idle.
AWS Free Tier includes 750 hours of public IPv4 usage per month for the first year, starting February 1, 2024.
AWS Cost and Usage Reports now include public IPv4 usage data.
Public IP Insights, a free feature of Amazon VPC IP Address Manager, offers insights into public IPv4 usage and security.
Consider adopting IPv6 to optimize usage and avoid increased charges.
The IPv4 to IPv6 transition isn't just a change in numbering systems; it's a paradigm shift towards a more sustainable and forward-looking internet infrastructure. IPv6 addresses offer an expansive pool of unique identifiers, eliminating the scarcity issue of IPv4 addresses. IPv6 also boasts enhanced security features and simplified network management, making it a future-proof choice for businesses.
